Right now, I’m at home with the flu—snuggled up under blankets, surrounded by cups of tea and tissues, and realising how quickly a space can feel overwhelming when you’re not well.
Being sick has a way of forcing us to stop, but it also highlights just how much our environment impacts the way we feel. When your home is cluttered, stuffy, or messy, it can weigh on you even more. And when your space feels lighter, fresher, and cared for, it truly helps you heal.
That’s why I wanted to share some simple things you can do during sickness to make the days easier, and why giving yourself a reset clean after sickness can feel like the final step in your recovery.
While You’re Sick: Comfort First, Little Habits Second
The main goal while you’re sick is simple: rest and recover. But sometimes the little things—tiny resets—make the space around you more healing.
Here’s What I Do
When I’m sick, I don’t try to do it all. I focus on little comforts that make a big difference:
I keep a small bin right beside me so tissues don’t pile up everywhere.
I crack the window for 5 minutes—even when it’s cold—because the fresh air changes everything.
I swap out my water glass once a day and always keep it full.
I give my phone and remote a quick wipe so I don’t re-touch germs all day.
And when I can, I straighten my blanket and fluff my pillows. It makes my “sick spot” feel calmer and less overwhelming.
Self-Care Rituals I Swear By
I sip endless cups of tea, lemon water, or broth to stay hydrated.
I let myself rest without guilt—healing is the priority.
A warm shower always resets me (more on that below).
I keep soft lighting, a fresh blanket, and quiet music nearby to make my space comforting.
I pause for a few deep breaths when I feel anxious—it helps me feel grounded again.
My Sick-Day Shower Reset
One of the most underrated self-care steps during illness is a simple shower. Done right, it feels like therapy:
Let the steam work for you – I close the door, turn the water warm, and breathe deeply. The steam opens up my chest and clears my head.
Switch between warm and cool – Warm water relaxes my sore muscles, and a quick cool rinse feels refreshing if I’m feverish.
Add aromatherapy – A drop of eucalyptus or peppermint oil on the shower floor turns it into my own little spa.
Take it slow – I imagine the water washing away the heaviness of being sick.
Care for my skin – I use a gentle wash and moisturise after, because being unwell always dries me out.
Finish with comfort – I wrap up in a fresh towel, slip into clean pyjamas, and if I have the energy, hop into bed with fresh sheets. Bliss.
Sometimes a shower isn’t just hygiene—it’s a reset for body, mind, and spirit.
After You’re Sick: The Power of a Reset
Once the worst has passed and you’re feeling better, there’s something incredibly healing about stepping back into a refreshed home.
Illness leaves behind more than tissues and empty mugs—it leaves lingering germs, stale air, and sometimes a feeling of heaviness. A proper reset doesn’t just clean your home—it lifts your energy and signals to your body and mind that it’s time to move forward.
Why a Reset Clean Feels So Good
Germs & bacteria are gone—you don’t have to wonder if sickness is “still hanging around.”
Fresh bedding = fresh start—there’s nothing like climbing into crisp, clean sheets after days in bed.
Clarity & calm—a reset home clears mental clutter as much as physical mess.
Energy boost—when your environment feels light and organised, it naturally gives you momentum.
And if you don't want to do it yourself book us we're happy to do it for you.
